How to Clean MTG Cards Safely (Dust, Sticky Marks and Grubby Sleeves)

Second-hand bulk, a deck that has done the rounds at the kitchen table, or a card someone put down in spilt squash: sooner or later you will have Magic: The Gathering cards that need a clean. Cards are printed card stock with a coated surface, so they tolerate gentle dry cleaning well but react badly to water, heat and solvents. The safest approach is always the gentlest one that works.

The short answer: start with a dry, clean microfibre cloth and wipe gently from the centre outwards. For sticky marks, use a cloth that is barely damp, wipe quickly, dry immediately and press the card flat under a heavy book. Never soak cards, never use household cleaners or solvents on foils, and leave valuable cards to a professional.

Can you clean MTG cards with water?

Only in tiny amounts. Card stock absorbs moisture through the edges and can curl, ripple or delaminate, so dunking or rinsing a card will almost certainly ruin it. A microfibre cloth that has been dampened and then wrung out until it feels nearly dry is as wet as you should go.

How do you remove dust and fingerprints?

A dry microfibre cloth, the kind sold for glasses or camera lenses, removes most dust and fingerprints. Hold the card flat on a clean surface and wipe lightly in one direction from the centre to the edge so you do not catch and lift a corner. A soft make-up brush is handy for dust in textured foils.

How do you clean sticky marks?

Breathe lightly on the mark or use a barely damp cloth, wipe gently, and dry the card at once with a second dry cloth. Then place it between sheets of kitchen roll under a heavy book overnight so any moisture does not cause curling. Repeat gently rather than scrubbing harder.

Method Safe for Risk Verdict
Dry microfibre cloth All cards, including foils Very low Always start here
Soft brush Dust on any card Very low Good for textured foils
Barely damp cloth Non-foil cards with sticky marks Curling if overdone Use sparingly, dry and press
Eraser Pencil marks on borders Can dull the surface Bulk cards only
Household sprays, alcohol, solvents Nothing Can strip ink or foil layer Avoid

Are foil cards harder to clean?

Yes. Foils are more prone to scratching and to curling when moisture is involved, so stick to dry microfibre only. If a foil already curls, our guide to why MTG cards curl explains how to flatten it gently.

Should you clean valuable cards yourself?

For high-value cards, especially ones you might sell or grade, it is usually better not to. Any cleaning can change the surface, and buyers may treat it as damage. A dry, light dust is the most we would suggest; anything more is a job for a specialist.

How do you clean card sleeves?

Sleeves are cheap compared to cards, so the simplest fix for grubby or cloudy sleeves is to replace them. If you want to clean sleeves, take the cards out first, wash the empty sleeves in lukewarm water with a drop of washing-up liquid, rinse and let them dry completely before reusing. See how to sleeve a Commander deck for sleeving tips.

How do you keep cards clean in the first place?

Sleeve anything you play with, wash your hands before a game, keep drinks and snacks off the play area, and store decks in a closed box away from damp and direct sun. A hard deck box keeps out dust far better than a rubber band or open tray.

What about grimy bulk from second-hand collections?

Dry-wipe the cards you plan to keep or trade and store the rest sorted in boxes. It is rarely worth deep-cleaning common bulk. Our guide to organising bulk MTG cards helps you decide what is worth your time.
