How to Play MTG Commander with Two Players

Commander is designed as a multiplayer format, but plenty of games happen with just two people: partners at home, a friend round for the evening, or the two players who turn up first on game night. A head-to-head game plays very differently from a four-player pod, with no politics and nobody else to deal with the biggest threat. With a few adjustments, it can be just as much fun.

The short answer: yes, you can play MTG Commander with two players using the normal rules: 100-card singleton decks, 40 starting life and 21 commander damage. Many pairs prefer a faster game, so they either agree a lower life total such as 30, or use Duel Commander, a separate community-run 1v1 format that starts at 20 life with its own banned list. Choose decks of a similar power level and agree the rules before you shuffle.

Can you play Commander with only two players?

Yes. Nothing in the Commander rules requires more than two players, and the same deck-building rules, command zone and commander tax apply. The main difference is pace and balance: decks built for four players carry answers for many opponents and can feel slow when there is only one. See Commander rules for beginners for the basics.

What are the 1v1 Commander options?

Pick one before you start so both players are playing the same game.

Option Starting life Feel Best for
Standard Commander rules 40 Long, big-spell games Using your normal decks
House rule: reduced life 25–30 (agreed) Quicker, still casual Weeknight games
Duel Commander 20 Fast and competitive Purpose-built 1v1 decks
Brawl (digital or paper) Varies by version Smaller decks, lighter Newer players

What is Duel Commander?

Duel Commander is a two-player version of the format maintained by its own community rules committee, separate from the main Commander rules. Games start at 20 life, it uses its own banned and restricted lists aimed at 1v1 balance, and decks are still 100-card singleton within the commander's colour identity. It suits players who want a tight, competitive game; for casual play at home, most pairs simply use the normal rules.

Should you lower the starting life total?

At 40 life, two decks built for multiplayer can take a long time to finish a game, because each player's damage has to cover a whole table's worth of life. Dropping to 30 or 25 by agreement shortens games without changing deck-building. Our guide to tracking life and commander damage shows simple ways to keep count.

Which decks work best in 1v1?

Decks with a focused plan, efficient creatures and cheap interaction shine head to head. Group-hug decks, cards that reward many opponents and slow political strategies are weaker, because there is no one else to trade favours with. Precons are a good, balanced starting point if both players use one; see upgrading a precon.

How do you keep a two-player game balanced?

Agree a rough power level using the brackets system, swap decks between games, and play best of three so one bad draw does not decide the evening. If one deck keeps winning, let the other player choose matchups. The brackets guide helps match decks fairly.

How long does a two-player Commander game take?

Using standard rules, a 1v1 game often lasts 30–60 minutes, quicker than most four-player pods because there are fewer turns between yours. Reduced life or Duel Commander games can finish in 20–30 minutes. See how long a Commander game takes for more.

Is two-player Commander good for teaching?

Yes, it is one of the best ways to teach, because you can play open-handed, explain decisions and keep the board simple. Use two well-matched precons and standard rules, then move to multiplayer when the new player is comfortable; our guide to teaching someone Commander covers this.
