Magnetising bases is one of the best upgrades you can make to a painted collection. But once the magnets are in, where do the models go? The best set-ups use those magnets twice: once in the transport case and again on the display shelf.
The short answer: store magnetised models in a steel-lined or magnetic case for transport, and display them on a stand or shelf with matching magnets or a steel surface, so they can't be knocked off.
Storage and display options compared
| Option | Holds models by | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel-lined transport case | Magnet to steel sheet | Game night, travel | Weak magnets slide in transit |
| Magnetic sheet on a shelf | Magnet to sheet | Cheap shelf display | Flat, single-level look |
| Tiered stand with magnet holes | Magnet to magnet | Showcase display | Check polarity when fitting |
| Foam trays | Friction | Non-magnetised models | Wears paint on raised detail |
What's the best way to store magnetised miniatures?
A case lined with a thin steel sheet. Every model clicks into place wherever you put it, so there's no foam rubbing the paint and no wasted space. Our comparison of foam trays, magnetic cases and stands goes into more detail.
Can I display magnetised miniatures on a shelf?
Yes. A self-adhesive steel or magnetic sheet on the shelf works, but everything sits on one level and the back row disappears. Tiered stands lift each row so every model is visible. See miniature display shelf ideas.
Do display stands work with magnetised bases?
The right ones do. WarSplay Pro has optional magnet holes in each plinth, so you can fit matching magnets and your models click into place, and its UV-printed scenic backdrops give the display a finished look. Our stands are compatible with Warhammer 40,000® miniatures and most other games on standard round bases.
Why do magnetised models still fall over?
Usually because the magnet is too weak for a tall or top-heavy model, or because it's sitting on a thin or painted surface. Bigger models need bigger or stronger magnets. Our guide to magnetic miniature display explains why it matters.
Is magnetic display safe with kids or pets?
It's much safer than loose models, because a knock won't send them flying. Keep loose small magnets away from young children. More tips in displaying miniatures with kids or pets.
Should I magnetise my models before buying a stand?
Either order works. If your stand has magnet holes, you can match the magnet size to the stand and fit both at once. See how to magnetise WarSplay for a clean, hole-free set-up.
Do magnets damage paint?
No, as long as they're under the base. The only risk is two models snapping together, so give magnetised models a little space on a shelf.
