Stocking fillers for a Magic: The Gathering® player should be small, cheap and genuinely useful at the table. Here's what MTG players actually reach for every game, plus one "big" gift that's slim enough to fit in the stocking itself.
1. Dice (lots of dice)
MTG players use dice for life totals, +1/+1 counters, tokens and loyalty. You can never have too many. A 20-sided spin-down die for tracking life and a handful of matching d6s make a classic stocking filler for a few pounds.
2. Card sleeves
Sleeves wear out and a new colour is a cheap way to refresh a deck. Standard size (66 × 91 mm) fits MTG cards. Commander decks need at least 100.
3. Toploaders
Rigid card holders for protecting a favourite rare or the player's commander. Handy, cheap and always running out.
4. Token cards and counters
Tokens are the little creatures and markers that spells create during a game. Commander decks can generate dozens. Printed tokens, counters or a small counter box all fit in a stocking.
5. A pen and notepad for life totals
Old-school, but plenty of players still like paper. A small hardback notebook with a nice pen goes a long way.
The stocking filler that steals the show: SquadPod Slim
Most deck boxes are too chunky for a stocking. SquadPod Slim isn't. It's a slim, rugged MTG deck box that measures around 168 × 100 × 50 mm, so it drops into a stocking (or a coat pocket) with room for dice on top.
- Holds a full 100-card Commander deck + 10 tokens, single-sleeved
- Front display window for their commander, rigid toploader included
- Hinged click-shut lid
- Five colourways, from classic Harbour navy to Blossom pink
- £19.99
Pair it with a pack of sleeves and some dice and you've built a complete "game night kit" – exactly the kind of setup we describe in what to pack for Commander night.
How many cards fit?
Worried about their sleeves? SquadPod Slim takes 100 single-sleeved cards plus 10 tokens, or about 90 double-sleeved cards. If they play a 60-card format, it fits double-sleeved with room to spare. Full details: MTG deck box capacity, single vs double sleeved.
