A toploader deck box is a deck box with a slot or window that holds your commander in a rigid toploader on the front. It protects your most important card and turns it into a label for the deck.
The short answer: it's a Commander deck box that keeps your commander separate from the deck, safe in a toploader and visible from the outside.
Toploader deck box vs standard deck box
| Toploader deck box | Standard deck box | |
|---|---|---|
| Commander storage | Separate, in a rigid toploader | Mixed in with the deck |
| Identifies the deck | Yes – commander on show | Needs a label |
| Protection for key card | High | Same as the rest |
| Looks on a shelf | Like a mini display | Plain |
How does a toploader deck box work?
You slide your commander into a toploader, then the toploader sits in a window or clip on the front of the box. The rest of the deck goes inside as normal.
Why do Commander players like them?
Your commander is the face of your deck, so putting it on show makes sense. It also stops your most valuable card getting shuffled and worn. Read how to protect and display your commander.
Is the toploader included?
With ours, yes. SquadPod Slim includes a rigid toploader behind its front window, and the Commander Deck Box with Card Stand includes one that locks to the front under the lid clip.
Will a sleeved commander fit in the toploader?
A single-sleeved card generally fits a standard toploader, though a thick or oversized sleeve may be tight. Check our card and sleeve size guide.
Does the commander still count as part of the deck?
Yes. It's still one of your 100 cards; it just lives in the command zone during the game and in the toploader between games. Learn more in how to build your first Commander deck.
