The Blubber Cove Underground Aquarium Cave is designed to disappear. Pour your sand or gravel directly over the top and the cave becomes a hidden underground tunnel — only the corner openings are visible. Your fish gain a fully shaded retreat that looks like a natural cavity in the substrate, while your aquascape view stays completely clear. UK 3D-printed in aquarium-safe PETG.

The substrate-on-top design

Most aquarium caves sit visibly in the tank — they're either decorative features or compromise the scape. This one is the opposite. The flat top and lip openings are engineered to be buried under your existing substrate, so the cave structure is invisible from above. Shrimp, bettas and corydoras get a proper enclosed tunnel system; you get to keep your minimalist or planted aquascape free of obvious plastic decor.

How to set it up

  1. Place the cave in the back corner of your tank before adding substrate
  2.
  3. Pour sand or gravel over the top — the flat lid takes substrate weight without sagging
  4.
  5. Leave the side openings clear so fish can enter and exit
  6.
  7. Optional: plant directly on top of the cave for hidden roots and a natural look

Also suitable for reptile and amphibian setups

While this cave is designed for aquariums, the same substrate-burial principle works for terrariums and vivariums. Compatible with axolotl tanks, crested gecko enclosures, snake hides and leopard gecko setups — bury under coco fibre, reptile sand or paludarium substrate for a natural underground hideout. PETG is non-toxic and won't leach in humid environments.

Frequently asked questions

Will the cave collapse under the weight of my substrate?

No — the lid is reinforced and engineered specifically to take substrate load. You can pour several inches of sand or gravel on top without any sagging or warping.

Can I plant on top of it?

Yes. Many buyers plant low-light species like cryptocoryne, anubias or carpeting plants directly above the cave. The roots grow around the cave shell and the planting hides the structure further.

Will my fish find the openings if the cave is buried?

Yes — keep the two side openings clear of substrate when you bury it. Fish find them within hours, and curious species like corydoras and kuhli loaches almost always claim the tunnel within a day.

Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes. PETG is shrimp-safe (no copper, no leaching) and the interior is smooth so shrimp can moult and forage without injury.

Can I use it without burying it?

Yes — it works as a visible corner cave too. But the substrate-on-top design is what makes this one different. If you want a fully visible corner cave, our Tall Mangrove Corner Cave or Wide Corner Cave are designed for above-substrate placement.

Does it work for axolotls or geckos?

Yes, as a secondary use. Axolotls use it as an underwater hide buried under fine sand. Crested geckos, leopard geckos and snakes use it as a humid hide buried under coco fibre or reptile substrate. PETG is non-toxic in both aquatic and terrestrial setups.

How is this different from your other corner caves?

We make several corner caves — pick by use case:

  • Underground corner cave (this one): designed to be buried under substrate, invisible from above
  •
  • Tall mangrove corner cave: visible above-substrate cave with mangrove-style pillars for vertical scape interest
  •
  • Wide corner cave: visible above-substrate cave with extra-large entrance for big-bodied fish like adult plecos and cichlids
