How to Rotate and Refresh Your Miniature Display

WarSplay Classic tiered miniature display stand

Most collections outgrow their display long before the painting stops. Rather than cramming every model onto one shelf, many collectors rotate: a curated selection on show, the rest safely stored, and a regular swap that keeps the display feeling new.

The short answer: choose a theme, show 20–40 of your best or newest models, store the rest in magnetic or foam-lined cases, and swap the display every month or two. Modular stands make it quick, because you can change the layout as well as the models.

Rotation styles compared

Style What goes on show How often to swap Best for
Newest first Your latest finished units Whenever a unit is finished Active painters who want motivation
Army spotlight One army or faction at a time Every 1–2 months Collectors with several armies
Seasonal or event Models tied to a season, campaign or event Each season or event Clubs and family living spaces
Best of the best Your strongest paint jobs Rarely Small spaces, guests and photos

Why rotate a miniature display at all?

Because a shelf you stop noticing stops motivating you. Swapping models makes the display feel fresh, spreads light and dust exposure across the collection and lets older paint jobs get their moment again. It also means you can keep a smaller, tidier display in a shared room.

How many models should be on show at once?

Enough to fill the space without crowding it. A single 17-slot stand with a few larger models alongside looks full but readable; three stands across a shelf can hold a whole spotlight army. Our guide to how many miniatures fit on a shelf helps you plan the numbers.

How often should I swap the models?

Every month or two is a good rhythm for most people, or whenever you finish a unit. A fixed date, such as the first weekend of the month, turns it into a small hobby ritual rather than a chore.

What theme ideas work well?

One army at a time, characters only, a single colour scheme, a painting-progress line-up from primed to finished, or a seasonal display with snowy bases in winter. Themes give the shelf a story, which is what makes guests stop and look. A small label explains the theme at a glance.

Where should the models go when they're not on show?

Somewhere cool, dry and dark, in cases that stop them rubbing together. Magnetised bases in a steel-lined case are ideal; foam trays work for unmagnetised models. Read how to store and display magnetised miniatures and miniature storage vs display.

How do I handle models safely when swapping?

Lift models by the base, never by weapons, banners or wings, and move one at a time. Give them a quick dust with a soft make-up brush before they go into storage so dust isn't sealed in. Our guide to cleaning dusty miniatures covers the safe method.

What makes rotation quicker?

Pre-assembled, modular stands that you can rearrange without tools. WarSplay stands lock together in different layouts, and our stands are compatible with Warhammer 40,000® miniatures and most other games on standard bases. The WarSplay Pro also has optional magnet holes in each plinth, so magnetised models can be swapped in seconds.

Can I rotate larger models too?

Yes. Characters, monsters and cavalry make great centrepieces for a themed display. The WarSplay Hero takes bases up to 80 mm, and the size guide shows which stand suits each base.
